Dumbarton Castle towards the west of Glasgow is more a rock than a castle really. In fact, the place is also called Dumbarton Rock and it's more appropriate given the number of steps you have to climb to reach the top. Little remains of the original castle, with dates back to the 11th century, but the site has been used during several wars including the Napoleonian ones when French soldiers were held in the prison (below).
Although a bit disappointing architecturally speaking, Dumbarton Castle still makes a nice viewpoint over the Clyde.
