Magnificent Glencoe

The word Scotland conjures images of peaceful lochs and romantic castles. These are all true of course, and you'll see plenty of them here. But if you look for a taste of a more rugged side of Scotland, you'd better head to the impressive area of Glencoe in the Highlands. Just a couple of hours' drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh, the valley boasts scenic mountains, quite misty on the day of my visit earlier this month. It's a feast for keen hillwalkers and a great retreat out of the hectic city life. It's also a historical site where the massacre of the MacDonald clan took place in 1672. You don't get much more Scottish than this.
