Happy Birthday Peter !

Nov. 5th is Guy Fawkes night in Britain, the celebration of the failed attempt to blow up the parliament in London in 1605. The conspiracy was led by a group of Catholics including the infamous Guy Fawkes whose effigy is burnt that night, along with bonfires and fireworks.

For me, the date coincides with the birthday of a friend, who holds a party every year in his house near Berwick-upon-Tweed. The same group of friends gathers from all parts of Britain and even Europe, builds a bonfire in the garden, cooks dinner in the warm kitchen, talks until the wee hours of the morning... The next day, they usually beat their hangover with a walk along the beach.

Unfortunately, during the last few years, I have been unable to make the trip from France. I contemplated making the most of the long week end this year but despite checking Ryanair, Easyjet and Flybe, I couldn't find a flight at the suitable time or price. So once again, I'm going to have to wish you a Happy Birthday from a distance, Peter. Have a nice party everybody !

Le 5 novembre, le Royaume-Uni fête la Guy Fawkes night, la célébration de l'échec d'un attentat contre le parlement de Westminster en 1605. Le fameux Guy Fawkes, un Catholique qui faisait partie de la conspiration, voit son effigie brûlée et des feux d'artifice sont tirés dans tout le pays.

Pour moi, cette date coïncide aussi avec l'anniversaire d'un ami qui organise une soirée dans sa grande maison près de Berwick-upon-Tweed (à la frontière avec l'Angleterre). La même bande s'y retrouve tous les ans, se rassemble autour d'un bûcher dans le jardin, tire des feux d'artifice, discute jusqu'au bout de la nuit dans la cuisine bien chauffée... Le lendemain, chacun soigne sa gueule de bois avec une balade le long de la plage.

Malheureusement, cela fait bien longtemps que je n'ai pas pu y participer. Cette année, j'avais pourtant l'occasion de profiter d'un long week-end mais malgré des recherches sur les sites de Ryanair, Easyjet et Flybe, je n'ai pas trouvé de vol au bon horaire ni à un prix abordable. Encore une fois, je vais devoir te souhaiter un Bon anniversaire à distance, Peter. Amusez-vous bien les amis !
