During the holidays, I got hooked on Scottish author Alexander McCall Smith. I heard about him because his books have just been released in France. So I dashed to WH Smith on rue de Rivoli to buy the three parts of his novel set in Edimburg, 44 Scotland Street. It was first serialised in The Scotsman like Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City, which were originally commissionned by the San Francisco Chronicle. To be honest, it's not quite as witty and it drags on a bit, especially in the third part. But there are some very funny moments, such as a Conservative party ball that only attracts six people, a nudist picnic jeopardized by rain and a chance encounter with a mob boss in Glasgow. I also bought an other series by the same author, The Sunday Philosophy Club. My bedside table is getting a bit crowded...

I've got "The right attitude to rain" to read. Started it a while ago and didn't finish. The title appealed. I've heard extracts of the Ladies Detective Agency ones which sounded good.
His books are like sitcoms with lots of dialogues and quirky characters. It's easy reading, like easy listening music, but highly enjoyable I think. Especially when you like Scotland.
